Giclée prints
All paper and canvas prints from Sivertson are considered archival giclée prints. Giclée (pronounced ‘jhee-CLAY) printing uses the latest inkjet print technology to create superior, long-lasting prints.
In the giclée printing process, original images (paintings or other artwork) are scanned and digitally stored in a computer before being sent to a high resolution printer. The giclée printer uses many more colors than a traditional 4-color offset printing process: a fine stream of ink (more than four million droplets per second) is sprayed onto archival paper or canvas. Each image is sent to the printer individually which allows for versatility and experimentation with the hue, value and density of the inks. Giclée prints have a longevity of 55-200 years and are noted for exceptional detail and dynamic color and depth.

Prints on paper
Fine art paper prints are printed on heavy, 100% cotton rag paper and are ready for framing. On many of our paper prints, we offer optional print framing in a classic style of white mat and black frame. See the Framing section below for details on this option.
Prints on canvas
Prints on canvas are available either as “stretched canvas” prints or as “framed dry-mounted canvas” prints. Both canvas print options are ready to hang on your wall. We offer four standard framing options with dry-mounted canvas prints: ebony black (formerly called dark oak); chocolate brown; natural maple (formerly called maple veneer); or weathered gray (formerly called weathered wood). Please see the illustrations below to help you choose the best option for your canvas print. Canvas prints use highly-pigmented archival inks on cotton canvas substrate. Our canvas/ink combination is rated 55+ years for lightfastness.
Should you choose a paper or canvas giclée print?
The substrate you choose for your giclée print will inform the look and feel of your print. Prints are reproductions of originals and if you’re looking for a close reproduction to the original, choose the substrate used on the original image. For instance, original watercolor paintings are done on paper and are often printed as giclée prints on paper for a similar look. And original oil paintings are painted on canvas and can be printed as giclées on canvas for a similar feel.
However, we believe that all media will reproduce beautifully on all substrates—the choice is best made by your personal preference and how you’d like to “finish” your new print for hanging on the wall.
Giclée prints on paper are ideally preserved by framing behind glass to protect the paper from elements in the air. You can also include a mat with the image. There are a myriad of possible mat and frame color combinations that could work together, but we frequently recommend the “classic style” of white mat and black frame. Every print on paper is beautifully finished with a white mat and black frame…and your print is then ready to hang on your wall. This popular style is widely used by artists and in museums.
Giclée prints on canvas: stretched canvas prints do not need frames or glass for finishing. We finish our dry-mounted canvas prints with a wood frame in your choice of ebony black, chocolate brown, natural maple, or weathered gray, and they are ready to hang on your wall.
The choice of paper or canvas print really comes down to this question: Do you prefer the finished look of a print with mat and glass inside a frame—or do you prefer the look of a print on canvas, without glass?

Prints on metal
Dye sublimation prints on metal use heat to transfer and infuse images directly onto aluminum, creating unsurpassed resolution, color vibrancy, and a durable, easy-to-clean print. They are especially suited for color brilliance in photography. The metal print is approximately .0625 inches thick and hangs approximately 1.5 inches from the wall. The print is ready to hang directly on your wall; no frame is needed. All our photographic images from Christian Dalbec are available as prints on metal in a gloss finish.
Custom print sizes
Images can be spectacular printed very large, and most prints are available in custom sizes. The maximum size for prints on paper is 40 x 60 inches, and the maximum size for prints on canvas is 38 x 72 inches. If you want a specific image printed larger than what is listed on its product page, call us at 218-387-2491 to discuss availability and pricing.
Archival / preservation framing
Your art will be framed using best practices for conservation/archival framing. Sivertson uses only 100% archival quality mats and backing sheets, mounting tapes, and glazed Tru Vue Conservation Clear Glass, which is 99% UV light blocking.
Should I frame my artwork?
Prints on paper need to be framed in order to hang them on your wall.
Prints on stretched canvas do not need a frame.
Our dry-mounted canvas prints are offered in four wood frame color choices to complement your image.
We can frame your artwork before it ships, or you can take care of framing on your own when the artwork arrives. If you’re giving artwork as a gift, your recipient will appreciate having a finished piece of art ready to hang on their wall!
If you need framing guidance of any type or have questions, please call us at 218-387-2491. We have a custom frame shop on site, are happy to discuss the many possible options available to you, and welcome you to stop in and talk with our experts when you’re visiting Grand Marais.
You can learn more by reading To frame, or not to frame? on our blog.
Framed paper prints
Our fine art prints on paper are framed using a white museum mat (approximately 3 inches wide) behind UV-protected “Conservation Clear” glass. A 1-inch ebony black wood frame finishes the package. This is a popular, classic style widely used by artists and in museums. (Add approximately 7-8 inches to image size width x height dimensions for finished frame allowance.) Note that on prints offered in extra-large sizes, we may use a 2-inch width black wood frame instead of a 1-inch width; this wider frame will be noted in the product description.
Framed canvas prints
Our dry-mounted canvas prints are offered with four frame color options: ebony black, chocolate brown, natural maple, and weathered gray. On all framed dry-mounted canvas prints, add 3-4 inches to image size width x height dimensions for finished frame allowance.
Framed letterpress prints
Our letterpress fine art prints are framed to the edge of the print using a 1-inch ebony black wood frame behind UV-protected “Conservation Clear” glass. There is no white mat. We include a 3/8-inch spacer between paper and glass according to archival standards; the glass does not touch the print, allowing the print to breath. Add approximately 2 inches to image size width x height dimensions for finished frame allowance. All of Rick Allen’s letterpress prints will be finished in this style and some extra-large poster prints will be finished in this frame style.
Custom framing
If you need framing guidance of any type or prefer a custom framing style, please call us at 218-387-2491. We have a custom frame shop on site, are happy to discuss the many possible options available to you, and welcome you to stop in and talk with our experts when you’re visiting Grand Marais.
Paintings and sculpture
With every purchase of an original painting or sculpture, we provide a certificate of authenticity to insure the new owner’s process, date of creation, and value of work at time of purchase. We also include a biography of the artist. The certificate of authenticity is useful for insurance claims, investment purposes, and estate planning.
Original prints
Original prints are hand-pulled prints created by a master printmaker and/or the artist. The original exists only in “print” form. Our letterpress prints, wood engravings, lithographs, linocuts, and wood block prints are considered original prints. In these processes, each color usually requires a separate block, plate, stone, or stencil which is carefully aligned with all of the other colors to create the finished print. Many original prints are also limited editions, and only a set number of prints are made and sold by the artist.
Hanging
Hangers for artwork are available by calling Sivertson at 218-387-2491. Most framed artwork using picture wire for hanging will benefit from two wall hangers to keep the artwork straight and stable on the wall. (Using just one hanger creates a pivot point that will require regular adjusting.)
Sunlight
Avoid direct sunlight when displaying your prints and paintings. Artists create their work with durability and longevity in mind. However, all art can fade and deteriorate in direct sunlight. It’s best to keep artwork safe from direct sunlight and fluorescent light whenever possible.
Cleaning
Oil paintings are not framed behind glass and are therefore exposed to dust and grime. To clean, dust gently with a damp or lint-free, microfiber cloth.
Acrylic paintings should be dusted lightly with a soft brush only. And take care when moving—do not use bubble wrap or other plastic with acrylic paintings because a chemical reaction can occur between the paint and plastic.
Frames and glass should be wiped with a damp cloth only; do not touch sticky substances to the surface of the frame or glass.
Prints on metal can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth and a light solution of dish soap and water, if needed.
Gift Certificates
A gift certificate makes for a wonderful holiday, birthday, wedding, or thank you gesture. Our gift certificates are available in a variety of giving levels and can be used at Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais or for online purchases.
Choose your gift certificate amount when purchasing. If you’d like us to print the recipient name on the certificate, please include the recipient’s full name in the optional “Order notes” area during checkout.
Gift certificates ship free and will not be taxed. For fastest delivery, we can email your gift certificate—just let us know in the order notes area when checking out that you’d like email delivery. We’ll then email you the certificate and you can print it out and hand deliver, or forward to your recipient.
